Dr James Oliver CPsychol AFBPsS

Individual Therapy
I am a Registered Counselling psychologist with over 25 years of experience working primarily with individuals across a wide range of psychological and emotional issues. My career has spanned specialist services in both the NHS and third sector, primary care settings, and staff counselling services within major London NHS trusts. More recently, I have worked in large university counselling services, deepening my understanding of the challenges faced across the lifespan. While I have extensive formal training (click above to view), my development has been shaped by thousands of hours spent alongside people during times of difficulty, distress, and uncertainty. These experiences have taught me that everything can be spoken about and that having a safe, non-judgmental space to do so is essential for supporting our mental health. I offer both time-limited and longer-term work, grounded in a research-informed, pluralistic psychotherapy model.

Clinical Supervision
I provide professional supervision and consultancy for counselling and psychotherapy practitioners, including those in training. I have offered supervision across a range of institutional settings—both as an external supervisor and within my employed roles.
I view supervision as a cornerstone of ethical, safe, and reflective practice. I also recognise that a therapist’s supervision needs vary depending on their level of experience, training, and the context in which they work. With this in mind, I offer a flexible, collaborative approach that supports the development of best practice, professional growth, and self-awareness.
Couples Therapy
Our relationships are integral to our well-being. They offer opportunities for growth, yet they can also present challenges. Sometimes, relationships require change or even dissolution, while at other times, they can be strengthened through mutual development. Therapeutic support enhances communication, facilitating conflict resolution and alleviating emotional distress. It also assists individuals and couples in making important decisions and managing life's inevitable ups and downs more effectively.
I have worked with couples within an NHS setting, as well as conducting professional mediation with individuals in conflict. My approach is centered on fostering understanding, promoting healthy communication, and supporting clients through life's relational complexities.
